Hey guys, I just downloaded Heroes 3 after not playing it for many years and want to get back into it. I've enjoyed watching the videos by /u/MeKick and have looked through the Heroes Community forums to learn as much as possible, and I want to check my knowledge. I'd like some feedback with your own experiences and opinions on the best heroes for each faction that I mention or miss.
Tower: I've always loved Tower as my favorite faction, and still enjoy playing Solmyr for that Chain Lightning, with Neela as backup for her armorer specialty and scholar to spread chain lightning. I find the Tower units themselves to be too expensive and rather weak, but having 3 shooters when finally built up means less losses overall, even if it relies a bit too much on magic. But library is always nice. I find that people generally complain too much about Chain Lightning needing recharge or hitting your own units; Solmyr is clearly the best offensive magic user in the game with sorcery and his spell and allows for greater expansion in the first couple of weeks.
Fortress: have not played this faction much, but I've generally found that Tazar is the absolute best starting hero here due to his armorer specialty combining well with Fortress units' high defenses to become the tankiest hero in the game. Bron can be helpful with his early basilisks, but is otherwise not that great. Best units here are the dragon fly for spreading weakness and the mighty gorgons for death stare. The lack of a full mage guild is a major letdown for me.
Conflux: a very interesting faction that I've just started to play as due to its completely unbalanced stats. While some players like to use Luna to take advantage of the fire wall, my favorite hero from Conflux is Monere for that starting Offense and Logistics, as well as the best Creature Bonus offered in Conflux. With the Magic University available for conflux, there is no reason to pick one of the elementalist heroes, their spell specialties are not that important. After upgrading to shooters, the best unit by far is the super fast Phoenix with its amazing base growth per week.
Inferno: another faction that I am not very familiar with. The only real strategy I see working here is to harvest demons, making Marius the best choice for main hero with armorer, and Pyre as support with logistics and that ballista. I find myself consistently disappointed with Imps and Gogs, but enjoy Cerberi for that no retaliation and Efreet for that fire shield.
Necropolis: one of my favorite factions because of how easy and automatic the necromancy skill works. Without a doubt, Galthran is the best Necro hero due to his skeleton specialty and his armorer skill to keep them alive. Together, they make Galthran the best creature specialty hero in the game. The best supporting heroes are Isra or Vidomina with their necromancy specialty to farm for more skeletons. Some people like Thant for the Re-animate dead spell, but the Necro mage guild is likely to get this anyway. Aislinn can also be useful with Meteor Shower, and is also a good pick. Aside from Skeletons, I've found that Vampire Lords are an amazing unit due to regen and Dread Knights are incredibly powerful with curse and death blow.
Stronghold: a great faction to play as for a fast blitz. My favorite Hero here has got to be Crag Hack for that offense specialty, closely followed by Gundula with the same but more balanced stats, or Dessa for that logistics specialty. I like the wolf raiders' double attack and the cyclops ability to siege, but my favorite creature here has got to be the Thunderbirds for their speed. Again, the lack of a full mage guild can be annoying.
Castle: the most basic yet fun faction, with plenty of extra attacks from units and stables to keep your heroes on the move. Sir Mullich is super overpowered with his speed bonus, but he is not really a standard hero for castle. My favorite hero for castle is Loynis with Prayer, which essentially acts as a combination of haste, bloodlust, and stone skin to give a decisive edge in battle. Loynis is limited by his Learning skill, but is otherwise great as long as you avoid other useless skills. He is the best non-damaging magic user in the game. For support my favorite is Orrin for that archery specialty to get a bit more out of the marksmen and zealots. Aside from the shooters, my favorite creature here is the Royal Griffon for its unlimited retaliation, and of course archangels with resurrect.
Rampart: another instance of a defensively oriented faction. While some players like to pick thorgrim to maximize magic resistance or mephala for extra defense, I find that Kyrre is the best hero available for Rampart due to the logistics specialty and archery for the elves. By minimizing the use of dwarves and dendroids, the player can maximize movement and focus money on the Centaur Captains, Grand Elves, and Dragons.
Dungeon: wrapping this up with my more recent favorite faction. Dungeon is an all around powerhouse because of the always useful mana vortex and spell specialists like Deemer with Meteor Shower or Jeddite with resurrection. However, I still find that Gunnar is the best hero available here with the logistics specialty and starting with tactics. At higher levels, tactics perfectly sets up the creatures who need it like harpy hags and minotaur kings. Black dragons are also a great unit to use.
So that is my general understanding of best heroes per faction and how they work well with their creatures. Solmyr wins in offensive magic for Tower, Loynis wins in buffing magic for Castle, Tazar wins in defense for Fortress, Crag Hack wins in offense for Stronghold, Galthran wins in creature specialty for Necropolis, Marius wins in creature specialty for Inferno, Monere wins in skills and creature specialty for Conflux, Kyrre wins in movement for Rampart, and Gunnar wins in movement for Dungeon.
Do you agree with my thoughts? Which other heroes should I consider? Thanks for your input.
